About AUMS Ltd.
AUMS Ltd. is the consultancy company of P.A.D. (Paddy) Secretan.
Paddy first became interested in aquaculture in the late '60s when he lived in Canada. At the time there was a developing trout industry in Denmark, and a sprinkling of low tech aquaculture production in various other countries, mainly involving such species as carp and catfish, plus oysters and mussels on the marine side.
On returning to UK in the early '70s, he recognised the embryonic industry's need to insure its primary asset, its stock, and thus set up one of the first stock mortality insurance scheme, with Lloyd's of London.
Paddy has always believed in the role that risk management has to play in aquaculture, and believe that it is an immensley valuable one to the industry. He has long argued that an important by-product of insurance are the risk identification and reduction disciplines it brings to the industry. Over the course of the last 35 years he has sought to enhance the role of risk management in aquaculture, helping to achieve this by establishing, in the early '80s, the Aquaculture Insurance & Risk Management Conference series, of which the 11th is scheduled to be held in Dubrovnik, Croatia, in March 2009.
Becoming an independent consultant in 1992 he set up AUMS Ltd. which has carried out aquaculture insurance and risk management work internationally, for many small and large organisations.
In addition to running the Aquaculture Insurance & Risk Management Conference, AUMS Ltd. provides aquaculture insurance and risk management training seminars for companies, bringing together the fundamentals of aquaculture insurance underwriting and the nature of the aquaculture industry in clients' areas of operation.
AUMS Ltd supports important aquaculture risk management initiatives. The company is a founding collaborator in AquaVetMed, an online registry of qualified veterinarians involved with aquatic creatures, and diagnostic laboratories able to do disease analysis and health certification work.
